PROCEEDS TO BENEFIT CHARITY PARTNERS AROUND THE WORLD INCLUDING AGE UK WESTMINSTER AND SAVE THE CHILDREN HONG KONG

Sotheby’s presents The Art of Working from Home, a selling exhibition comprising a myriad of artworks created by members of Sotheby’s staff across Europe, Asia and the US, including security guards, technicians, photographers, sale administrators, front of house staff, and the many experts across Sotheby’s specialist departments.

This year, the annual exhibition is inspired by the creativity and innovation which has blossomed in the uniquely challenging circumstances of 2020. The global initiative will kick off with exhibitions in London and Hong Kong on 12-18 December and 11-23 December respectively, followed by New York from 13-17 February 2021. Prices range from HK$200–50,000 / £18-5,000, presenting the perfect opportunity to pick up a unique piece of original art, or a holiday gift for friends and family. Sale prices for works in the New York exhibition will be available in February.

Fostering creativity for a good cause, a portion of the funds raised by the staff exhibition will benefit selected charities across three locations: Age UK Westminster in London, Save the Children in Hong Kong and, to be announced in due course, a local charity partner supporting working artists in New York.

The London exhibition presents over 150 works, including paintings, prints, photography, ceramics, jewelry and sculpture. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Age UK Westminster’s mission to promote the wellbeing of older people in Westminster, London, helping them to lead independent fulfilling lives for as long as possible. The charity provides services that reduce financial hardship, disadvantage and social isolation for people aged 50 plus.

“As a result of the challenges faced by many this year, I have seen our colleagues investing in their hobbies and interests more than ever, and it is simply wonderful to see more of some of the many unknown talents that have come to the fore. With entries from many of our EMEA offices and from all levels of our teams, this year’s exhibition is more inclusive than ever before.”

Sunflowers
2020, oil on canvas, 50 x 40cm (framed)
£520

“The Coronavirus has affected us all in many ways. One unexpected silver lining for me was that I was able to do more painting than usual - uninterrupted. As I enjoy painting and get a great deal of satisfaction from the process (despite the frustration I get when the ideas don’t transfer to the canvas) I have been able to produce quite a few paintings that I’m happy with.”

2020 Lockdown
2020, mix media, 30 x 50cm approx.
£290

“2020 is absolutely unpredictable! These artworks were inspired during the lockdown.

I often watched the daily corona update with my young son. My ‘2020 Lockdown’ piece reflects slogans used at the height of the lockdown. I also used the lockdown time to teach my son how to make lots of things, including knitting. He knitted a rectangle which he showed his teacher and said it was a mask, which inspired me to knit one for my artwork. At the beginning of lockdown, and due to shortages of PPE, I made the helmet shield for my son using his helmet. I remembered the first time he wore it in March to the supermarket; so many people stared at us with all sorts of facial expressions.”

Sotheby’s Hong Kong presents over 50 works rooted in both western and eastern artistic practice, encompassing media as diverse as painting, sculpture, textile and photography. Created by our Asia employees, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of these works will benefit Save the Children Hong Kong, which supports vulnerable children and their families across the Asia Pacific region through the pandemic.

“I wish to thank wholeheartedly all those who contributed works to this exhibition as well as those who will support it and those who will donate to the charity – any small amount makes a difference. I hope everyone will enjoy the variety of talent to be discovered at Sotheby’s.”

Fish Rubbing and Calligraphy
2020, ink on paper, framed44 by 80 by 3 cm (framed)
HK$20,000

“This is an ink rubbing that I did of a fish that I bought one afternoon in a Hong Kong wet market for about HK$ 35 (just over US$4). I believe it was a snapper.

I then wrote with traditional Chinese brush and ink about how different species of snappers were known by different names in China and Japan, with some featuring in everyday home meals, and the others fetching top prices in Michelin star restaurants.

After I had finished this work, I gave the fish to my calligraphy teacher as I did not want to be wasteful. She politely accepted it and said she would cook it for dinner. I doubt that she actually did.

Do not ask why I did not eat the fish myself.”

Hollywood Road, Hong Kong
2020, watercolor on paper, framed 54 by 41.5 by 1.5 cm (framed)
HK$3,800

“’Hong Kong’ has been a subject matter that I am very fond of, especially things that provide a glimpse of the city’s past. Hollywood road is one of the first roads to be built in Hong Kong after it became a colony. The quaint antique shops on two sides of the street accentuate the classic beauty of Hong Kong. Through depicting the cityscape, I hope to record the face of Hong Kong before it changes as time goes by.”
